Mountain Ecosystems

Ecosystem Restoration 2023 - 2033

A key action of the FAO MPS Childrens Call to Action (2021) to protect mountain areas against the impact of climate change is pillar II; mountains are water towers.

This created the foundation for the ZWDP official side event ‘The Voice of Children and Youth on Water for Sustainable Development; Taking Action for Humanity and the Planet‘ during the UN 2023 Water Conference and the launch of the Saving the Worlds Water Towers (SWWT) campaign.

The SWWT campaign adopts the 3 pillars of the children’s call to action and for pillar II has focus on;

1) Maintain the integrity of the mountain ecosystems for supporting and delivering globally important ecosystem services, including freshwater provision, and restore degraded mountain ecosystems.

2) Ensure water equity between highland and lowland populations, as well as intergenerational water equity.

3) Promote traditional and indigenous knowledge and innovative practices for the sustainable management of natural resources in mountains.

Zero Water Day Partnership is actively engaged in the United Nations efforts for ecosystem restoration 2021-2023 see ZWDP entry.

Key locations for action are: 1. the Harz mountains and Deister in northern Germany < see photos below > 2. Chamonix Mont Blanc in the French Alps and 3. Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Swiss Alps. It covers 824 km2 and comprises over 23 municipalities in Valais and the Bernese Oberland.

Here and There

A Call to Action

“Here and There”. How we use and value water in our everyday lives makes a difference. If we all act to converse and value water, safeguard our water sources and supplies, and protect our ecosystems, we can have a global impact. That collective global impact can be seen in our mountains and glaciers and polar regions; in effect we will be saving the worlds water towers

The Zero Water Day Partnership (ZWDP) ‚Saving the World‘s Water Towers‘ campaign is a key element of the Water Partnership Ambassadors (WPA) Programme.

It connects education for sustainable development and local community action in schools and communities with others around the world.

A key aspect of WPA is global citizenship education so children and students can share and exchange learning, experiences and activities & project.  The focus on action enables students to „do something now“, measuring and understanding the challenges and assessing the impact of action as part of a lifelong learning process.

ZWDP encourages each child and student to start and keep a lifelong learning diary to inspire them, to give them ideas for partnership and most importantly <HOPE> that with others they can realise the changes needed for the future of humanity and the planet.
