Sustainable Mountain Development and Water Conservation
Every three years, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) as the lead UN agency on mountains, together with the Mountain Partnership Secretariat, is tasked with preparing the UNSG report on sustainable mountain development, in collaboration with governments, relevant agencies of the UN system and NGOs.
The 2025 report was presented at the eightieth session of the United Nations General Assembly as requested by the latest UNGA resolution (A/RES/77/172).
The report focuses on the critical need for sustainable development in mountain regions. It details various international efforts and innovative projects aimed at tackling the effects of climate change, supporting resilient economies and improving governance.
The report underscores the importance of protecting vulnerable mountain communities and offers a comprehensive set of recommendations for Member States on how to strengthen policies, build partnerships and gather better data to ensure the long-term well-being of these vital ecosystems and their inhabitants.
